Aug 16, 2023Power Strip Sparks Bel Air House Fire, $100K In Damage: Fire Official
BEL AIR, MD — A fire damaged a Bel Air home Wednesday around 12:30 p.m. A power strip appears to be to blame, according to officials.
The fire broke out at the home located at 609 Prospect Mill Road in Bel Air. The home's owners were out of state and a passerby saw smoke coming from the home. Other witnesses, including an off-duty Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company member, stopped and used garden hoses to control the fire through a broken bedroom window.
Investigators credit their actions with containing the fire that broke out in the bedroom. The fire has been blamed on the electrical failure of a power strip. The home sustained extensive heat, soot and smoke damage throughout the other rooms, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office. The one-story, single family dwelling had an estimated loss of $100,000 including contents.
Thirty firefighters from the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company took just 10 minutes to control the fire.
